November 21st, 2018|Comments Off on Will Flexible Workspaces Disrupt the Traditional Satellite and Branch Office Markets?

In our introductory post to Flex space solutions post “Flexible Workspace what is it and who benefits?” we explained flex space refers to office space provided outside the “conventional lease” markets. In Toronto, this includes coworking space, most business centres and shared office space providers. As corporate businesses learn more about how the flex space networking culture and entrepreneurial environment affects their employees and see the results, flexible workspace has the makings of becoming a long-term trend in this segment of the office space market. When you dig, you see there is far more driving the move to a flexible workspace by corporations than to a cheap office space. Why Flexible Workspace is Tailor Made for Satellite and Branch Offices To move employees from corporate headquarters to a satellite or branch office requires a lot of time and energy from managers and support workers to procure, furnish, decorate, and outfit an office space with […]

Why Home Offices Should Move to an Alternative Office Space It’s true: working from the comfort of your home may be an idyllic scenario for those who are self-employed, or for online entrepreneurs running a small business with only a handful of remote employees. Depending on where you live, a home office can also spare you the time, expense and hassle of a commute. However, it’s also true that working from home has its drawbacks — and many more than you might expect, if not already experienced. Here, we explore why you should move your office from your home to an alternative office space, such as a shared, traditional (private or semi-private), or coworking space — or at the very least, consider renting a virtual office. Changing Needs of Coworking Space in 2018

June 27th, 2018|Comments Off on Changing Needs of Coworking Space in 2018

Coworking space has evolved to mean much more than simply shared office space. While coworking office space is an accessible and affordable alternative to renting a traditional commercial office space, lower operational cost is no longer its strongest selling point. As noted in our previous article about the changing needs of coworking space in 2017, small business owners and entrepreneurs are now seeking a sense of community with other like-minded professionals. So what makes for a sense of “community”? For some small business owners, it may mean an environment that fosters professional networking, or alleviates the isolation of an individual or home office. For others, it may mean working alongside those sharing an industry or vocation, such as tech development or remote freelancing. For still others, it may mean a sense of exclusivity, such as coworking spaces that are solely dedicated to women. Regardless of what it may mean to […]

What is Coworking Office Space?

Coworking: The Who, What, Why & Where for Startups & Entrepreneurs As a marketer one of my prime resources for promoting all our products are the questions that potential clients ask about our services. Since coworking is a new offering in the flexible workspace category that we didn’t have a lot of questions about, I used a tool which identifies the questions in the suggestions that users get when they enter search terms into Google. The best content that I can add to a site is content that answers questions our website visitors may have about our offerings. Coworking: What Does It Mean? Easily the $64 question as even the spelling is disputed as to whether it is coworking or co-working. What it means depends on who you’re asking. To some users it means: All non-traditional office space (flexible workspace) A workplace design and environment Office space with themed […]

Flexible Workspace: What is it and Who Benefits?

March 21st, 2018|Comments Off on Flexible Workspace: What is it and Who Benefits?

I recently read an interesting Flexible Workspace Study about how flex space is perceived by end users; individuals responsible for procuring office space for their companies; coworking and serviced office providers and landlords. The survey was not huge as the study describes its composition as being “The survey was sent to over 500 people across the industry.”. However, combined with my experiences here at Telsec Business Centres for going on 4 years and as an end user I’d agree with much of what the study shows as the benefits of the workplace environment for workers and organizations. What is Flexible Workspace or Flex Space? Flexible workspace: the term the industry uses to refer to any type of space outside of the conventional lease market. Identifying the different types of respondents included excellent definitions for coworking; serviced offices; hybrid office providers which are office space providers with a mix of coworking and serviced office space and flexible workspace which includes all […]

Trends in the business space looking forward

December 21st, 2017|Comments Off on Trends in the business space looking forward

It’s the end of the year as we’ve known it and more of us are several yards short of fine. Only after the phrase “dumpster fire” becomes a frequently used descriptor on the national newscasts does one realize they’ve entered a new place, a terra incognito built simultaneously on fear and false equivalency. But that’s where we are and that’s what drives culture and culture is both cause and outcome of business. If only the only thing to fear was fear itself. That luxury is so last decade. Writing this piece while simultaneously checking social media and listening to the drone of cable news in the other room one might think we’re on the edge of a swirling abyss, surfing the event horizons of several significant disasters at the same time. So this isn’t really a predictions piece. It is more of a how things look right now piece. The […]

You Can be a Coworking Nomad

November 10th, 2017|Comments Off on You Can be a Coworking Nomad

Imagine a utopia where people are no longer compelled to be connected to one location, a life where the world isn’t limited by distance or borders but is instead open to exploration at whim and supportive of cultural immersion. Imagine living on a remarkably unified planet. For many entrepreneurs, that world already exists. A few months ago we looked at the Rise of the Digital Nomad, that type of entrepreneur who lives to travel and has found ways to work independently or as part of a team while constantly moving from one place to the next. While their lives might seem chaotic and messy, some of the most productive and yet peaceful people find their grounded selves constantly moving over ground yet continually able to serve their clients. That they’re able to balance work and flight so easily is amazing though how they do it is more a mixture of […]

Do you know coworking? Coworking as you may know it is changing. The fact is, it might have already changed! The reason is that more an more people are looking at shared office space as an alternative to other commercial office options. This means that coworking spaces are getting bigger with more people using them. The other reason that coworking is growing is that more small business owners are seeing the cost savings of shared office space. They are seeing the benefits of the community involvement opportunities that come with the entire concept of coworking. The concept of coworking is entering a highly competitive phase, as more and more new spaces are opening up. But the fact that shared office space is being offered at lower rates than other office options is no longer enough to lure the smart small business owner. It is the sense of being part of […]

Stop worrying about millennials and get ready for Gen Z

January 5th, 2017|Comments Off on Stop worrying about millennials and get ready for Gen Z

Millennials (aka Generation Y) are those born between 1982 and 1993 are proving to be a very entrepreneurial generation. But the next generation may be even more ambitious than them! Enter Gen Z (those born between 1994 and 2010) or what is called “The internet generation” – who are by far the most tech-savvy, connected and self-educated group. Unlike Millennials who love the gig economy, research is showing Gen Z want steady paycheques. What also makes Gen Z different? They claim to be both more accepting and more rebellious. Rebellion was pretty much absent for Millennials in their youth, as they seemed to have had a very shiny outlook on things. Gen Z is upset about the system that they’re inheriting – so it seems rebellion is back. The first members of Gen Z will be graduating from university in just a few years, and market researchers and trend forecasters […]

Can corporate use coworking space to accelerate growth, innovation and collaboration?

December 8th, 2016|Comments Off on Can corporate use coworking space to accelerate growth, innovation and collaboration?

When most people think of coworking office space, they usually think of a large open space filled with millennials, freelancers, one-person or two-person small businesses and start-ups looking to get off the ground. Some small business owners and corporate business executives might be a little concerned by the fact that their employees are hanging out with other businesses’ employees and holding sensitive telephone conversations just a few feet away from a potential competitor or someone looking for a new idea. Along with worrying about how employees are using their time, corporate privacy, intellectual property loss and potential security issues are some of the reasons why many corporations have been reluctant to place their team or a sub-team from utilizing coworking space. The problem is that forward-thinking team managers see the benefits of using a coworking space for creative teams to thrive, despite the perceived risks that may or may not […]

The Real Differences Between Coworking and Business Centre Office Solutions

September 12th, 2016|Comments Off on The Real Differences Between Coworking and Business Centre Office Solutions

The flexible workspace sector is home to all types of different types of work spaces and combinations of places to conduct business. Those who are “in the know” about office situations understand the subtle differences between a coworking space and a shared office (a serviced office in a business centre). The differences between coworking and business centre office solutions are an often-debated topic between those who are using coworking facilities to run their businesses, and those businesses who have chosen to use the facilities and services of an office business centre. So let’s look at the similarities and the differences. Many will tell you that cost is the biggest difference, but in fact, some coworking plans will cost you upwards of $300 per month. Yet, you can get a shared office space at an office business centre for as low as $225 per month. More importantly, an office business centre […]

Reasons why it may be time to abandon your current office space

March 29th, 2016|Comments Off on Reasons why it may be time to abandon your current office space

Technology is evolving and changing rapidly. And perhaps the way the staff of your small business is working, has been evolving too! The Internet and access to Wifi are changing where work can be done. These factors and other technology are re-shaping the needs of business for traditional office space. Traditionally your workers required special tools and processes, and those tools were at the office workplace. Therefore, in order to work, you staff needed to commute from their home to that workplace. This has all changed, and now many more people are able to work from home and not take up valuable office real estate. According to a 2015 telecommuting statistics report published by GlobalWorkplaceAnalytics.com, the number of regular work-at-home employees has grown by 103% since 2005. Currently, nearly 4 million or 2.5% of workers are doing their jobs from the comforts of home at least half the time. Here are […]

Is the cubicle dead or just dying?

March 15th, 2016|Comments Off on Is the cubicle dead or just dying?

As Millennials are becoming the largest group in the North American workforce, companies are changing their office strategy to attract and retain them. This is because, unlike previous generations, they are less loyal and more demanding. Millennials are not interested in being stuffed in cubicles and being told to just get the work done; they work differently than those who preceded them. Businesses are not just giving into the wishes and wants of Millennials, they are putting money into research to see how to best accommodate a group of people that are predicted to make up to 30% of North American retail spending by 2020. Happy and productive employees also make for good customers. Companies responding to their growing relevance are increasingly turning to human-centered designs to attract them. Researchers are observing human behaviour and envisioning a way to do things more efficiently, enjoyably, productively and intuitively. In doing this, […]

How to Create a Productive Office Space

January 19th, 2016|Comments Off on How to Create a Productive Office Space

There is always room in every office to boost productivity – but finding the right balance and setting is not always that easy. You want your staff to focus on their tasks, but they also need to collaborate to bring better ideas and results to the projects at hand. This is the challenge of trying to create a productive office space. It is often thought that to have focus in an office means having a quiet space, but quiet offices are not always the best environments for collaboration. Collaboration requires a very different environment than one meant for solitude. Collaborative office space is where employees can brainstorm, bounce ideas off one another, and make phone calls without worrying about disturbing those around them. In trying to create a productive office space, a balance must be struck between the need for a team to be collaborative and for some individuals to […]

What Happens to a Small Business When it ‘Graduates’ out of Coworking?

October 1st, 2015|Comments Off on What Happens to a Small Business When it ‘Graduates’ out of Coworking?

An often talked about term in the coworking movement is “graduating” out of coworking and into your own space, but what if you are in need of more private workspace and are not ready to set up your raw office space in a traditional office building?
