Its Almost Flu Season Again

As September nears to a close, so does the approach of flu season. While traditionally flu season is from November to April, cases are already being reported of the H1N1 (swine flue) The first pandemic swine flu outbreak of Canada’s fall flu season has struck remote aboriginal communities on Vancouver Island in westernmost Canada. Even FluWatch (Canada’s national surveillance system) who monitors the spread of flu and flu-like illnesses on an on-going basis. FluWatch reports are posted every Friday, they contain specific information for health professionals on flu viruses circulating in Canada. According to FluWatch “The intensity of Pandemic (H1N1) infection 2009 in the population is low to moderate with a small number of hospitalizations” This does not mean you sh...

Not all ads are created fairly

Not all ads are created fairly, especially when they are for Toronto Office Space on free bulletin boards. Recently I was helping a friend who is looking for a new place to live, I stumbled on the commercial and office section of one of the boards. I was curious to see what others were listing in terms of office space Toronto. It seemed like some ads put one thing in their headline and did not even mention what that had to do with the office space they were renting. Some ads listed a price in the headline, but did not say what that price was for in the body of the ad. The one that floored me the most was the ad offering $100 per month office, but when I called them I was told that was for a virtual office, I wondered why they did not mention that in their ad. If the ad says one thing and t...

Working from Home is Not Easy

This is a topic that I have touched on before, but it is an important one that needs more addressing. For the past few years, I have had a virtual office at Telsec and it has worked well for the image that I want to portray to my clients. I have a professional address and a place I can meet clients when required. Having a professional receptionist answer my calls has also been good for business. Why am I thinking of upgrading? When your friends and family know you work from home, they think that means they can call you anytime. The problem is that they do not realize they are distractions to you getting your work done. They would not call you at an office and expect you to be able to speak for a long period of time. There is also that ability to turn work mode on and off when you go to a p...

Back to School Can Mean Savings for Business

It is this time of year that parents start think of getting the kids back to school. While a lot of the shopping is for back to school clothing, there is also back to school supplies. Most of the major retailers who sell back to school clothing, also set up an area to put stationary and other school supplies on sale. Even the big box office supply stores will also put office supplies and computers on sale to attract parents into their stores. While a large portion of these supplies are intended for kids going back to school, a great deal of the items they put on sale can also be used in an office. Some big box office retailers like Staples, are even offering up 50% off sales on office supplies like paper, printers, pens, file folders, even desktop computers and notebook computers. The savi...

Free Blue Jays Tickets

While in a meeting this week, the conversation got side tracked and I jokingly asked, if people would use the city garbage service less, like they attended baseball games less after the strike of 1994 Major League Baseball strike? Well, obviously unless you have a Toronto office space that uses a private garbage collector, the garbage has piled up during the Toronto garbage strike. Somehow the conversation came back around to baseball and the low attendance at Blue Jays games, even when they were doing well.  So when I got to my next meeting at Telsec, I suggested a promotion. Anyone who signs up for a Toronto virtual office package during the month of August, would be given a free set of Blue Jays tickets. Yes, event when someone signs up for a $30 Toronto Mail Service virtual office pack...

Canadian Virtual Office Space

This past weekend I went camping. While most of my fellow campers were Canadian, there was a number of Americans who were camping with us. One of the American I met was a custom office furniture manufacturer from Ohio. We had a chance to talk for a while and he mentioned that he has been doing business in Canada for the past 20 years without a Canadian Office. He told me that he now recognizes that he needs to make his Canadian presense know, especially if he intends to increase his business on this side of the border. He was planning to open an office back in November, but the global economic downturn put those plans on hold. I asked him if he had ever considered opening a Canadian virtual office in Toronto. He said he had considered a post office box address in Canada, but was not sure t...
