I am Always Asked-What DSLR Camera Should I Buy?

As a photographer, I participate on a number of photography forums and blogs. I do this to learn new techniques and get tips on the things that I do not know about. I also like to give back by sharing my knowledge and answer questions. One of the most frequent questions I see on these forums and hear from friends and family is “What Camera Should I Buy”? The answer is not a simple one. Often the first reply on the forums comes from someone who has a personal bias for one brand over the other. The thread turns into a “My camera brand is better” type of debate. This is not often helpful to the person posing the question. The most common brand debate is Canon Vs Nikon because these two brands are the biggest selling brands of cameras, especially when it comes to digital single-lens reflex cam...

Photo Quilting Seems to be a New Trend

Yesterday while I was working at my downtown Toronto office space, I got a call from a friend who wanted me to help them do something they had seen on Facebook. They wanted to do a sliced up a photo of their company logo to create a photo quilt for their company Facebook profile. I had seen this done on some web photo galleries and was quite impressed. The idea is to take a large image and slice into several smaller images and arrange them in a contact sheet style of a gallery so the thumbnails make one big image. Finding examples of this proved to be difficult, but I found this site that told me how to do it. hacking-facebooks-new-profiles. Here is an example of what a photo quilt would look like in a web photo gallery. Each of the thumbnails is a separate file. Individually they have no ...

Buying a New Camera and Dealing with Sales Staff

This past Friday I forced myself to buy the new camera body that I have needed for the past year. My current camera is almost 5 years old and the time to upgrade has long passed. I really needed a new camera body and to put my old camera body into work as a second or back up camera body mode. I went to the local (well not local anymore) camera store where I purchased my first Digital SLR camera and all of my accessories over the past 5 years. I was assisted by a lovely young woman who did not shoot Nikon, but was very knowledgeable about the product. She joked that she had considered switching from Canon to Nikon, but she had too much money invested in Canon lenses and accessories. My intent was to purchase either a Nikon D7000 or the camera it was designed to replace, the D90. All of the ...

Why so many businesses are searching for a Toronto office space without the hassles

I had lunch today with a commercial real estate broker that I attended high school with. She told me that the change in the economy has changed the way that businesses look at office space in Toronto. In past economic downturns, growing businesses would look for deals on class A properties to enhance their look and image, but todays up and coming businesses are passing on unserviced office space in favor of Toronto executive offices. They want a space with office services Toronto that does not require them to have to worry about leasing office equipment or buying office furniture. Businesses do not want to sign long term office space agreements that lock them in for several years. Businesses want the flexibility to grow and change their workforce size without having to break leases. Todays...

Where is the Big Call for Help in Australia

I was out visiting my girlfriend’s family in Oshawa this weekend. My girlfriend has a friend who lives in Australia, her father brought up the point that there is no call for help in Australia like the one a year ago for Haiti.  One fifth of the state of Queensland is flooded and out of contact with the rest of the continent. Power lines and telecommunications are down. More people are effected in this disaster than Haiti, yet the rest of the world is not scrambling to help. While Australia does have the infrastructural to help these people in the short term, aid is needed to help them rebuild and get their lives back. Farmers have not just lost this years crops, but the soil that would have supported crops for years to come. Home owners not only lost their homes, but in many cases l...

What Are The Chances It Was The Same Bill Carroll

Yesterday I was getting a coffee in the kitchen at my downtown Toronto office space when Tim (the guy in the office next to me) started talking to me about some guy he had heard on the radio.  He had just returned from Los Angeles for a conference with other branch office mangers. While in Los Angeles he was driving a rental car and came across KFI AM 640 radio station and started to listening to some guy named Bill Carroll. He really liked this guy and what he had to say. For twenty minutes Tim went on to tell me how this guy Bill Carroll was just great. I mentioned that there was a guy I used to listen to in Toronto named Bill Carroll, before someone broke my car antenna and I was left with only my satellite radio. For the past few years my radio listening has been to Howard Stern and Bu...

Homeless Man With Announcers Voice – Real or Hoax

A seemingly homeless man who has been flooded with job offers after an online video went viral. The video featured his smooth announcing voice. A number of radio personalities including Howard Stern, had their doubts as to whether this video was real or a hoax. Some feel that it was a publicity stunt for the radio station that he called out the letters of during the interview. Ted Williams claims to be an out of work and homeless person after years of drug and alcohol abuse. Williams stated that he has been clean for over 2 years, but did not have the resources to get back into the voice business. Williams became an overnight celebrity after The Columbus Dispatch posted a web video of him showing off his amazing announcer voice skills. He even appeared on CBS with his mother, who said thei...

19 Bell Canada Employees with the 50 Million Lotto Max

If you are having problems reaching the Bell Canada call centre in Scarborough today, blame Lotto Max.  Friday’s Lotto Max drawing for 50 million dollars was won with one ticket, that was jointly held by 19 Bell Canada call centre employees. Each of the wining ticket holders will take home about 2.4 million dollars each.  This is enough money for each of these workers to leave their jobs and take early retirement. In some workplaces throughout North America, group lottery purchases have been banned by employers out of fears of losing an entire group of staff. Some companies have been left high and dry by a group of employees winning a lottery and quiting their jobs. Most recently 4 employees at Lethbridge Iron Works won a 16 million dollar 649 draw and decided not to return to work, ...

Happy New Year 2011

2011 is going to be a great year! With New Years eve falling on a Friday Night and New Years day is a Saturday, my usual Saturday rituals are a little mixed up. Normally on a Saturday, I can be found wondering through St. Lawrence Market. I park my car at my downtown Toronto office space and walk the 3 blocks to the market. Some Saturday mornings I can be found on the streets that make up Kensington Market, but instead of parking at One Yonge Street and walking to the market, I will park at the Kensington “Green P” parking lot. This Saturday being a holiday the markets and most other stores are closed. A new year comes with new things to look forward to and plan for. I have so many things planned for 2011, so many that I will have to get an early start on them. Just before the ...

Wow is 2010 is over already!

As I was working in my Toronto private offices the past few days, I noticed that it was much quieter than most weeks. I guess that some people had taken the time between Christmas and New Years as a vacation. It was then that I realized that 2010 is coming to a close. While I am looking forward to 2011, I am going to miss 2010. It is hard to believe that 2010 is almost over. In the span of the year things have really changed for me. I started doing more photography work for various clients. I got to work with some other very talented photographers by assisting them on their shots, I also got to do a very special shoot with a model from Detroit and had the assistance of a very well known artist setting up the model. I am getting more and more known for my photography and getting the recogni...
