This week is Global Entrepreneurs Week and there are more than 300 events planned by more than 150 organizations in the GTA. Global Entrepreneurship Week is an international movement designed to inspire millions (mostly young people) to embrace the concepts of innovation, imagination and creativity through entrepreneurship. There are various types of events going on around Toronto including networking events, meet and greets, training events, free seminars and other professional development events, plus a whole lot more.

One of the larger events as part of Global Entrepreneurs Week is Startup Weekend, a global network of passionate leaders and entrepreneurs on a mission to inspire, educate, and empower individuals, teams and communities. This is the sixth year of Startup Weekend Toronto, but very first Maker-themed Startup Weekend Toronto.

What is a Maker event? We were curios too. It seems that Maker events are are ones focused on building physical products during the weekend. The event is being hosted by OCAD University, where competitors will have access to workshops full of maker tools and materials plus guidance and training from expert mentors. They will also have access to 3D printers, laser cutters and other electronics that will help them build rapid prototypes and launch their startup within the 54 hours of the event.  The first-place winners will be taking home a brand new MakerBot Replicator 2 3D printer from GE.

This event is not just for Makers, but it is also for developers, designers and business experts who are looking to help build prototypes and launch startups that use hardware and software to change the world.

It is often said that entrepreneurship is integral to the social and economic fabric of Canadian society. Some statistics say that small and medium-size businesses in Canada represent almost 98% of all businesses. Other statistics say that small and medium-size businesses make up about 48% of total employment.

In a statement by the Prime Minister on Global Entrepreneurs week, he said “Entrepreneurs are hard-working and dedicated individuals who contribute immensely to our country’s economic growth and prosperity. This week, we celebrate their passion, drive and confidence. Entrepreneurs are the backbone of the Canadian economy, and I encourage all Canadians to join me this week in celebrating their innovations and successes.”

Global Entrepreneurship week and Startup Weekend Toronto calls upon Torontonians and  Canadians to support, celebrate and encourage small business ownership.

At Telsec, we understand the challenges of entrepreneurship and try to assist and foster the dreams and work ethic of entrepreneurs. Many of Telsec’s virtual office clients and office space Toronto tenants are, or once were, entrepreneurs. They chose to open their business at an office business centre as their virtual office assistant, or as their physical office space – not only to save money on capital expenses associated with traditional raw office space, but also because they understand that Business Centres Make Your Business More Professional.
